Situated in rural South Sligo, Ballymote is a picturesque town steeped in history, best known for the striking ruins of Ballymote Castle, a 15th-century fortress that once stood as a symbol of power in the Northwest region, built by the Mac Donnell family. In the 21st century Ballymote is now the second largest town in Sligo supporting a large rural population in its hinterland.

The site of the new Ballymote Community and Recreational Campus is well served by public transport and easily accessible to pedestrians and cyclists travelling from the town, schools, the Ballymote Heritage Walk and the train station. Ballymote Train Station is a scheduled stop on the (up to 7 times daily) Dublin-Sligo rail service, a key transport infrastructure asset for the Northwest supporting economic and tourism development in the region.
